Vera Okonkwo makes paintings that feel like arguments — urgent, physical, and never quite resolved. Born in Lagos and raised in Harlem, she works in oil on raw canvas using her hands as much as her brushes. Her practice is rooted in the idea that emotion leaves a physical trace, that grief and joy and rage all have textures. A graduate of the Yale School of Art (MFA, 2023), she's shown at the Studio Museum's emerging artists program and had a solo debut at Pioneer Works in 2025. For WornCanvas, Vera translated her studio floor into a wearable — every scrap of process, every residue of feeling.
