Grid Studies

by Kofi Mensah · Lower East Side, NY

Geometric patterns that collapse West African kente logic with New York City grid systems. Bold, structural, unmistakably Kofi.

Kofi started Grid Studies after getting lost in the Garment District for the third time. "I kept noticing how Manhattan's grid breaks down below 14th Street — it goes from perfect order to beautiful chaos. That's exactly what happens in kente weaving when the pattern maker improvises." Each piece in this collection starts with a strict geometric framework, then introduces controlled breaks — asymmetric color blocks, interrupted lines, unexpected negative space. The result is pattern work that feels both mathematical and alive. Printed on heavyweight cotton using a seven-pass screen print process for color depth you can feel.
